Can Red Light Therapy Help With Soreness and DOMS?

DOMS — delayed onset muscle soreness — is the defining limitation on training frequency for anyone who trains with genuine intensity. The 24-72 hours of reduced performance after hard training is the gap that separates a mediocre training progression from an elite one. Red light therapy has the strongest evidence base for addressing DOMS of any recovery modality.

Why DOMS Happens

DOMS is caused by mechanical strain during exercise that produces micro-tears in muscle fibres, inflammation as the immune system responds to the damage, and the accumulation of metabolic waste products (hydrogen ions, lactate) that contribute to the burning sensation. The severity of DOMS is proportional to the novelty and intensity of the training stimulus — which means the hardest workouts produce the most severe DOMS.

How Red Light Intervenes

Red light therapy addresses all three DOMS mechanisms simultaneously: it accelerates the repair of micro-tears in muscle fibres through enhanced mitochondrial ATP production; it reduces the inflammatory response that causes swelling and pain; and it increases blood flow to clear metabolic waste products faster. No other single recovery intervention addresses all three mechanisms at once.

The Evidence

A systematic review of 37 randomised controlled trials on red light therapy for DOMS found consistent reductions in perceived soreness scores, significantly faster recovery of peak force production, and measurable reductions in creatine kinase (a blood marker of muscle damage) compared to control groups. These effects are largest when red light is applied within 2 hours post-exercise.
