How Long Should a Red Light Therapy Session Be?
Session duration is one of the most frequently asked red light therapy questions — and the answer is not a simple number. Optimal session length depends on your panel's irradiance output and what you are trying to achieve. Understanding this relationship will help you get the most from your HiStrips panel.
The Dose Relationship
The therapeutic effect of red light therapy follows a dose-response curve. The dose is determined by irradiance (mW/cm2) multiplied by time (seconds), which gives energy per unit area (J/cm2). The therapeutic window for photobiomodulation is approximately 3-10 J/cm2 for most applications. Below this window, effects are minimal; above it, additional time provides diminishing returns.
Duration by Panel Irradiance
For HiStrips panels at 100mW/cm2 irradiance: 3-5 minutes per body area delivers the full therapeutic dose. For lower irradiance panels (60mW/cm2): 6-10 minutes per area is needed to reach the therapeutic window. Session duration scales inversely with irradiance — the more powerful the panel, the shorter the session needed.
Session Length by Goal
For general recovery and sleep support: 10-15 minutes per session covering the main body areas. For targeted muscle recovery: 5-10 minutes per major muscle group. For skin and facial treatment: 5-10 minutes per session. For full-body coverage: 10-15 minutes at 30-40cm, treating front and back where possible.
