Can Red Light Therapy Help With Tendon and Joint Recovery?

Tendons and joints are the recovery bottleneck for the majority of active people. Muscles recover relatively quickly because they have good blood supply. Tendons and joints do not — which means they accumulate damage faster than they repair it. This creates the overuse injury cycle that affects most people who train consistently. Red light therapy is one of the few interventions that effectively addresses this.

Why Tendons and Joints Are Slow to Recover

Tendons have approximately 1/3 the blood supply of muscles, which means they clear inflammation and deliver nutrients at a fraction of the rate. Joints — particularly articular cartilage — have no direct blood supply at all, relying on synovial fluid diffusion for nutrition and waste removal. This biology means that inflammation in tendons and joints persists longer and resolves more slowly than in muscles.

The Red Light Solution

Red light therapy addresses the root cause of slow tendon and joint recovery in two ways: increased local blood flow (photobiomodulation stimulates angiogenesis — the formation of new blood vessels) and direct anti-inflammatory effects in joint tissues. The 850nm near-infrared wavelength specifically targets deep joint tissues including the knee, hip, shoulder, and spine.

Clinical Evidence for Tendinopathy

A systematic review in the Journal of Athletic Training found that red light therapy produced significant improvements in tendinopathy outcomes across 12 randomised controlled trials — with improvements in pain, function, and tendon structure. The British Journal of Sports Medicine published guidelines recommending red light therapy as a first-line treatment for Achilles tendinopathy and lateral elbow tendinopathy.
